DCAT’s Scholarship Committee is proud to announce that Lisa Giles, a 7th grade teacher at Key Largo School, is the 2008 Excellence in Science grantee. She will use the funds she received to expand the Everglades, Keys and Ocean (EKO) program which provides students with real life science research experience focused on the South Florida environment. This year long program targets at risk students in the 7th grade and uses hands on science activities to motivate, inspire and encourage students academically. Throughout the school year students work on research projects that reinforce the scientific method. This process allows students to become astute at making higher level scientific observations inside the classroom and beyond. The year-long program concludes with a “Science Night” where students present their scientific findings to the local science community. This scholarship was given in partnership with the National Science Teachers Association.
The Excellence in Science Scholarship Program is supported by funds raised at DCAT’s Annual Golf Outing. |
