DCAT Announces 2012 Making a Difference Awardees

Robbinsville, NJ, April 4, 2012 – The Science Education Scholarship Committee of the Drug, Chemical and Associated Technologies Association (DCAT) is pleased to announce that Michael Scully of John Jay Science and Engineering Academy in San Antonio, Texas and Rebekah Hammack of Stillwater Middle School in Stillwater, Oklahoma are the 2012 recipients of the DCAT Making a Difference Award for their innovative science education programs for high school and middle school students.

Through the Making a Difference Awards and other initiatives, DCAT strives to both recognize and support science educators who develop programs that influence students to initiate or extend their interests in the exploration and investigation of science and its application to global problems.


High School Instructor Awardee: 

 
Michael Scully of John Jay Science and Engineering Academy in San Antonio, Texas has developed the Purple Martin Research Center (PMRC), a student-led program dedicated to researching the purple martin and educating the San Antonio community regarding the care of this species. It is designed to be a catalyst for promoting scientific inquiry and the awakening of a lasting curiosity for the natural world in the minds of students living in an urban environment.

Middle School Instructor Awardee: 
                          



Rebekah Hammack of Stillwater Middle School in Stillwater Oklahoma developed a four component engineering program that includes a summer camp, after school mentoring program, interdisciplinary engineering units and professional development opportunities for middle school instructors to incorporate engineering components into preexisting curricula. The program is designed to increase performance and attitudes toward math and science, while introducing students to engineering and its impact on the world.
