Passing of Former DCAT Board Member: Barry Dean Titlow (9/26/49 - 3/1/11)

Robbinsville, NJ, April 1, 2011 – It is with great sadness that the DCAT organization learned of the passing of one of its former board members, Barry Dean Titlow on March 1, 2011. Below is an excerpt from his obituary published in the San Diego Union-Tribune on March 13, 2011.

Barry was born in San Mateo, CA, September 26, 1949, and graduated from San Diego State University where he met his soul mate, Valerie Casazza, whom he married in 1971. After college, Barry went to work as a food chemist and then later ventured into technical sales, product development and regulatory affairs. In 1998, with his wife both as a life and business partner, they founded their own company, Compound Solutions, Inc. Barry, a true entrepreneur, was passionate about his field of work. He served on the Board of Directors of the Drug, Chemical & Associated Technologies Assoc, belonged to the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, and was President-elect of the Association of Analytic Communities, where he had the distinction of being the only non-government member of the Board of Directors in 108 years. His interests and passions were not limited to work, however. A competitive swimmer in high school and college, swimming gave him great pleasure throughout his life, and remarkably he completed the Alcatraz to San Francisco swim in 2009! He loved reading, playing the guitar, and woodworking. Ever the world traveler and adventurer, in 2008 he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, Africa. His accomplishments were many, but he believed he was not here on Earth by accident, and the things most important to him were to be a good husband, a good father, and a good friend. Those he loved and who loved him know he accomplished that. He loved his family beyond measure and was a true and compassionate friend. Throughout his illness, he showed by example what could be accomplished by the force of will and a positive attitude. Never complaining, he saw each day as a gift, not to be wasted or taken for granted. He was smart, funny and lots of fun. This extraordinary man's life was an example and gift to his devoted family and those who were blessed enough to be his friends. He is survived by his cherished family: Valerie, his wife of 39 years, two sons, Nathan (Mindi) and Matthew (Whitnie), four grandchildren, sisters Arlene and Cindy, and a loving extended family. A celebration of Barry's life was held Saturday, March 12, at The Crossings at Carlsbad, CA. In lieu of flowers, Barry requested that donations be made to The San Diego Cancer Institute, 910 Sycamore Ave., Ste. 102, Vista, CA 92081.
