Robbinsville, NJ, March 23, 2010 – The Drug, Chemical and Associated Technologies Association’s (DCAT) Science Education Committee is pleased to announce that Dennis Foreman of Zane Trace Middle School in Chillicothe, Ohio and Susan Hrenko of Worthington Kilbourne High School in Columbus, Ohio are the 2010 recipients of the DCAT “Making a Difference Award” for their innovative science education programs for middle school and high school students. Through the “Making a Difference Award” and other scholarship initiatives with the NSTA, DCAT strives to both recognize and support science education programs and their educators who, through their passion for the field of science, influence students to initiate or extend their interests in the exploration and investigation of science and its application to
global problems.

After studying basic environmental topics, students are encouraged to find projects they are passionate about and work with their parents to apply what they’ve learned. Projects include home energy audits, a river bank clean-up project and a five-stream recycling program for which the school is a community drop off site. Future plans include an expanded recycling program, energy fair, and community outreach.

Susan Hrenko, a high school science teacher and intervention specialist, won for the WKHS Greenhouse, a project that introduces high school students with disabilities to plant cultivation, creating opportunities for student success and community building. Through guided scientific inquiry, the students learn about their plant, and then based on their abilities and plant of choice, maintain raised flower beds, use plants in recipes, take plants home for personal gardening, and become role models for elementary school students with disabilities. Future plans include the installation of rain barrels and storage units, collaboration with family consumer science classes, and campus beautification projects.
